The Waterford hurlers face into the new season without their two first choice midfielders from last summer's Championship, Stephen Molumphy and Philip Mahony.
Last week the county's 2012 captain Molumphy confirmed he will miss the current campaign due to his work commitments with the Irish Army.
Coming on the back of that setback, Déise manager Michael Ryan will also have to cope without the promising Mahony who burst onto the scene last season.
The Ballygunner youngster is set to spend 2013 on foreign shores. The older brother of star forward Pauric is in Thailand at present and has intimated that he will travel to America for the summer.
Philip Mahony made his Championship bow against Clare in last June's Munster SHC semi-final, slotting in at centre-field alongside skipper Molumphy.
A member of the Waterford Under-21 team last term, he held onto the starting berth for the Munster final loss to Tipperary and the subsequent All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Cork.
Ryan has named veterans Tony Browne and John Mullane in a provisional 35-man panel for the 2013 campaign, admitting recently that he is 'reasonably confident' that the pair will feature for the Déise in the coming months.
Evergreen wing back Browne, who turns 40 in July, boasts four Munster winners' medals and three All-Star awards and would dearly love to end his career with All-Ireland honours. If he plays this season, it would be his 22nd campaign with the Waterford senior side.
The 2013 squad list released by the Waterford management includes 12 new faces, three of whom hail from current county champions De La Salle - Eddie Barrett, Jake Dillon and Eoin Madigan.
Some of the new players are due to line out in Waterford's seasonal opener against UL in the preliminary round of the Waterford Crystal Cup on Sunday week (January 20).
