Hurling star DJ Carey is being treated in hospital after collapsing in a garda station.

The 41-year-old former Kilkenny All Star is regarded by many as the greatest hurler of his generation.

It is understood he took ill while attending to some business at Kilkenny Garda station this morning.

He was rushed by paramedics to St Luke’s Hospital where his condition is said to be stable.

The sports figure, who has won five All-Ireland titles and nine All Star awards, has been hit with personal and business difficulties over the past year.

Last May the Commercial Court made orders against him and his partner Sarah Newman, well-known for her role in the television show Dragons‘ Den, for the repayment of almost €9.5m to Allied Irish Banks.

The debt was linked to loans for properties at the exclusive Ladycastle estate in The K Club in Co Kildare and at Mount Juliet in Kilkenny.

In recent weeks it was reported the pair had split.

Carey retired from inter-county hurling in 2006.
