Shock for Rossies as O'Donnell steps down
Fergal O'Donnell has resigned as Roscommon senior football manager after three years in charge of the squad.
The news comes as a surprise as it was expected that the former county midfielder would embark on a fourth season at the helm.
However, he met Roscommon County Board Chaiman Michael Fahey last night to inform him of his decision to step down 'due to family reasons'.
A statement released by the County Board read: "During his tenure, Fergal led the team to the county's first Connacht SFC title in nine years by defeating Sligo in 2010 and made the team a competitive force again.
"The Board would like to extend its gratitude to Fergal and his management team.
"Their hard work, dedication and level of professionalism was greatly appreciated by the Board, the players and supporters."
O'Donnell's last match with the Rossies was their All-Ireland fourth round qualifier defeat to Tyrone at Croke Park back in July. They were beaten by Mayo in this year's Connacht final.
