Murphy to take over from Micko as Wicklow boss

Rathnew's Harry Murphy will be named as Mick O’Dwyer’s replacement at the helm of Wicklow football, the Irish Examiner has reported today.

Murphy will be ratified at a County Board meeting on Monday night but he has big boots to fill. Mick O’Dwyer had been at the helm for the last five years, winning the Tommy Murphy Cup in 2008 and taking Wicklow to marvellous runs in the All-Ireland qualifiers in 2009 and 2011.

Following this year’s defeat to Armagh, Micko confirmed it was his last game in charge and county chairman Mick O’Hagan set up a committee to source a new manager.

Murphy will come to the job with the vast experience of being Rathnew’s most successful manager over the last 12 years, during which time he guided them to four senior titles in a row in 2000, 01, 02 and 03 and also steered them to a further three championship crowns in ‘05, ‘09 and ‘10.
