Galway ease past IT Sligo in FBD League
Galway completed their Connacht FBD League campaign with a facile 1-20 to 0-7 victory over IT Sligo in Tuam, while Mayo defeated provincial champions Roscommon in the day's other big game.
Galway, whose title hopes were ended last time out by NUIG, took a 0-11 to 0-4 lead into the break. Matthew Clancy kicked four first half points, and the wing forward added 1-2 in the second half.
Jonathan Ryan, Gary Sice, Eddie Hoare, Garrett Bradshaw, Fiachra Breathnach and Cillian de Paor were also on target for Tomas O Flatharta's side.
Meanwhile, a 2,000-strong crowd watched Mayo get the better of Roscommon by 1-12 to 0-8 in Ballyhaunis.
The tide turned just after Fintan Cregg had pointed the Rossies into a 0-8 to 0-6 lead in the 32nd minute. Shortly afterwards, Mark Ronaldson flicked a through ball from Brian Benson to the net after he had got to it before goalkeeper Eamonn McGinley.
An experimental Mayo side kicked a number of wides after that, but they did more than enough to merit the win. Ronaldson led the scoring from full-forward with 1-7 (0-6f), and centre-forward Cathal Freeman, in his first inter-county appearance since breaking his leg in 2009, played well - particularly in a well-contested first half.
Roscommon, who were left ruing a poor second half display, had two points apiece from Kevin Higgins, Cregg, Jonathan Dunning and free-taker Donie Shine.
NUI Galway claimed another inter-county scalp when they beat Sligo by 3-9 to 0-13 at Enniscrone, with Jason Doherty firing home 3-3 of the students' tally. Mark Breheny and Adrian Marren top-scored for the Yeats men with five points each.
