Fitzgerald reappointed as Waterford manager
Davy Fitzgerald has been reappointed as manager of the Waterford senior hurlers, following a special meeting of the Waterford GAA Board in Dungarvan tonight.
Fitzgerald, along with his selectors Padraig Fanning and Pat Bennett, was handed a one-year term, with nobody named as being in the running against him.
Others to have been linked with the job included former Kilkenny hurler Eddie O'Connor, Mount Sion boss Jim Greene and De La Salle manager Michael Ryan.
Ryan guided De La Salle through to a Waterford SHC semi-final yesterday, courtesy of a 2-19 to 0-4 win over Tallow.
This fixture meant that he missed out on his backroom duties with the Dublin Ladies All-Ireland winning football side at Croke Park.
Ryan's three daughters were also involved with Waterford in yesterday's All-Ireland Intermediate Ladies Football final against Donegal.
Fitzgerald took charge of the Waterford senior hurlers in June 2008, succeeding the long-serving Justin McCarthy.
In his first season at the Deise's helm, the former Clare goalkeeper led them to an All-Ireland final appearance. This year they won their first Munster SHC title since 2007.
Waterford lost out to eventual All-Ireland winners Tipperary at the semi-final stage of the Championship in August, going down by 3-19 to 1-18 at Croke Park.
