McIntyre gets another Galway term

John McIntyre has been given the go-ahead for another two-year term as Galway senior hurling manager, following last night's meeting of the Galway Hurling Board.

A statement confirmed that there was 'universal approval' for the decision at the meeting. The new deal for the Tipperary native includes a review by Hurling Board officers at the end of the first year.

McIntyre took the reins from Ger Loughnane two years ago, and has guided the Tribesmen to successive All-Ireland quarter-final appearances.

In 2010, Galway reached the Leinster final for the first time, and won the NHL Division 1 and Walsh Cup titles.

In his recent annual report, the 49-year-old McIntyre highlighted the fact that Galway now had two pieces of silverware in the trophy cabinet, with the league win representing their first national senior hurling success in six years.

He said that Galway had won 12, drawn one and lost three of their 16 competitive matches over the season. The three defeats were against the eventual All-Ireland finalists, Tipperary (twice) and Kilkenny.

McIntyre reckoned that he needs to find 'two or three more players' to make further progress and challenge for All-Ireland honours, and that the Tribesmen have to develop 'their ability to close out games.'
