Meehan set to miss clash with Wexford

Galway skipper Michael Meehan has been ruled out of Saturday’s All-Ireland qualifier against Wexford and could face several weeks on the sideline

The 25-year old, just back after being out since March with a serious knee injury, suffered ankle ligament damage in Saturday’s 1-14 to 0-16 Connacht semi-final loss to Sligo.

"I got the injury scanned on Monday and while it is just a sprain it could take a few weeks. I will definitely not play against Wexford and if we get through, I will just have to wait and see for the following week," said the Caltra clubman.

Galway will face a run of six games in succession if they are reach the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Meehan, who was speaking in Galway at the launch of Betpack.com’s sponsorship of the Eglinton Casino Galway Races Poker Classic, said it was a disappointment to again be on the sideline having been out since injuring a knee against Kerry in March.

"It is a bit of blow again having just come back. But that’s the nature of things, sometimes you get a run at it without an injury and other times it is different. I just have to work hard to get it right," he added.

Galway County Board have withdrawn a controversial planning application for floodlights at Pearse Stadium and have decided to start the process from scratch, following objections from some local residents.

They are employing planning consultants CRS Ltd, who have undertaken other GAA projects such as floodlight applications for Casement Park in Belfast; Páirc Esler in Newry St Tiernach’s Park in Clones and Kingspan Breffni Park in Cavan town – in a bid to restart the process.

The floodlight application has met with opposition from some local residents and a Garda investigation was launched after a complaint was made about one aspect of a document.
