The Gaelic Writers Association (GWA) honoured legendary players and journalists at their annual awards dinner held at the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel last night.

Three iconic players from both hurling and football were recognised for their on-field achievements in the past, and inducted into the GWA Hall of Fame.

In football, Down’s Sean O’Neill, Teddy McCarthy of Cork and Seamus Moynihan from Kerry; followed in the footsteps of former recipients including Mick O'Dwyer, Jimmy Keaveney and Peter Canavan.

For hurling, Eddie Keher from Kilkenny, Galway’s Joe Connolly and Brian Whelahan of Offaly were given the accolade.

O’Neill was a central part of the great down side that brought Sam Maguire north of the border for the first time ever in 1960.

Teddy McCarthy became the only player to win both senor football and hurling All-Ireland medals in 1990 when the Rebels completed a historic double.

Moynihan was one of the great footballers of his generation while Keher and Whelahan have already been written into the history books as hurling legends.

Joe Connolly was Galway hurling captain and delivered one of the most memorable All-Ireland acceptance speeches of all-time when the Tribesmen broke a long losing streak in 1980.

GAA president Christy Cooney; GPA chief executive Dessie Farrell and Croke Park Stadium director Peter McKenna were also among those in attendance for the event.

The journalists who were given Lifetime Achievement Awards were legendary commentator Micheal O Muicheartaigh, Sean Og O Ceallachain, one of the longest serving radio broadcasters in the world, and Tom O’Riordan, who combined a career in running and competed in the 1964 Olympics with a lifetime in print journalism.

The GWA also acknowledges a GAA PRO of the year and last night’s recipient was Jim Forbes from Cork, who has been Munster Council PRO for the past three years.
