Wexford capture camogie double

Wexford captured a National Camogie League double at Semple Stadium this afternoon as the Slaneysiders prevailed in the Division 1 and Division 2 finals.

A 67th-minute point from substitute Ursula Jacob helped Wexford to a 1-7 to 1-6 win over Kilkenny in the Division 1 decider.

Scores were hard to come by during a keenly-contested opening half, with defences very much on top.

Wexford dominanted possession early on but were guilty of missing some goalscoring chances through Josie Dwyer and Una Leacy.

JJ Doyle's charges led by 0-2 to 0-0 aftre 15 minutes thanks to scores from Caroline Murphy and Kate Kelly, but Kilkenny rallied in impressive fashion.

Scores from Marie Dargan, Ann Dalton, Aoife Neary and Denise Gaule edged Kilkenny into a 0-4 to 0-2 lead by the 28th minute.

However, Kelly added her second point for Wexford to ensure a 0-4 to 0-3 interval scoreline.

Kelly got Wexford off to the perfect start in the second half, notching a well-taken goal after just 25 seconds to push her side back in front.

Kilkenny placed Wexford under huge pressure in the fourth quarter, with Katie Power's 61st-minute goal ensuring Ann Downey's side led by 1-6 to 1-5 late on.

But Wexford's perseverence paid off with points from Leacy and Jacob seeing them crowned champions in dramatic fashion.

Meanwhile, in the Division 2 final, All-Ireland Junior champions Offaly failed to add a league title to their Championship silverware as Wexford ran out 2-9 to 1-9 winners.

Offaly blazed an early trail as the free-taking accuracy of Elaine Dermody edged the Faithfuls into an early 0-3 to 0-0 advantage.

But Wexford bounced back thanks to a speculative 14th minute goal from Lisa Bolger.

Offaly's Arlene Watkins had luck on her side before the interval as her fortuitous goal edged Joachim Kelly's side 1-6 to 1-5 ahead at the break.

But Wexford had better luck than their counterparts in the second half, with Lisa Bolger's twin sister Linda adding a second goal for the newly-crowned champions.
