Donegal retain Dr McKenna Cup

David Walsh stunned Tyrone with a smash-and-grab raid and retained the Dr McKenna Cup for Donegal at Brewster Park.

Walsh grabbed a sensational winning goal in the tenth minute of stoppage time, just when it looked as if the Red Hands had done enough to scrape a win from a thrilling decider.

It was a bad night for Mickey Harte’s men, with a further blow in the form of an injury to ace attacker Stephen O’Neill.

He was taken to hospital with a dislocated elbow and is likely to miss the early stages of the National League.

Michael Murphy struggled to reproduce his spectacular scoring display of Ballybofey 10 days earlier, and was restricted to just two points, both from frees, in the opening half.

A Colm McFadden free had Donegal in front for the first time on nine minutes, but each time they took the lead, Tyrone produced a swift response.

The teams were level on six occasions, before the Red Hands pulled away with scores from Tommy McGuigan and Kyle Coney to lead by 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Earlier, Stephen O’Neill, with three, and Martin Penrose, with two, had kept Mickey Harte’s men in touch, but had Donegal not sent a rash of passes astray, they could have been in control by that stage.

Adrian Hanlon, David Walsh and Leo McLoone did hit excellent scores, but too often, their offensive efforts ended in frustration, with Murphy largely starved of possession.

O’Neill had just shot his side four ahead when he dislocated an elbow and was taken to hospital by ambulance.

And Donegal turned the game back in their favour with scores from Adrian Hanlon, McFadden and David Walsh to go level in the 72nd minute.

And it was Walsh who drove a loose ball to the net deep into stoppage time to win it for John Joe Doherty’s side.
