The players may want him out but Mike McNamara is set to remain as Clare senior hurling manager following events at last night's Clare County Board meeting in Ennis.

McNamara made a stirring address at the meeting, confirming his desire to stay in place as manager of the Banner hurlers, reflecting on the progress made in 2009 and outling his plans for next season.

He spoke to delegates present for close to 30 minutes after members of the media had been asked to leave the room.

The Scariff man, who was last month reappointed as Clare boss for the second year of his current two-year term, is under pressure following the revelation that 26 of the 27 players on the Clare panel have voted to have him removed from the position.

A letter from those 27 players was read out at last night's meeting explaining that only one squad member had sided with McNamara in a vote of confidence on November 1.

But the Clare County Board are standing behind the under-fire boss, with County Board officials pledging to work with McNamara to iron out any problems they can.

It is hoped that a proposed meeting between the team management and players, scheduled to take place within the next week to ten days, will find a resolution to the issue of player unrest.

Although Clare County Board chairman Michael O'Neill insisted that McNamara and his selectors have the full backing of the county executive and that a Cork-style players strike would not be allowed to develop, the likelihood of a revolt has certainly now increased.
