Miskella facing nervous wait

Star Cork defender John Miskella is today sweating on the outcome of a CCCC disciplinary meeting which could affect his chances of appearing in next month’s All-Ireland football final.

Croke Park’s Central Competitions Control Committee burned the midnight oil in their deliberations over aspects of Cork’s semi-final win over Tyrone.

Miskella was caught on camera slapping Tyrone substitute Brian McGuigan in an incident which sparked a series of exchanges involving players from both sides.

Referee John Bannon from Longford had his back turned to the flashpoint, but when order was restored he consulted with an umpire before showing a yellow card to Miskella.

The GAA’s CCCC has the authority to ask Bannon to look at the incident again and report back to them on his views.

If he agreed Miskella deserved a red card, the player would be handed a proposed suspension, presumably one match, which would be the final.

Miskella would then have the option of taking his case to the Central Hearings Committee.

“The CCCC will not be commenting publicly on the matter,” a Croke Park spokesman told the Evening Echo newspaper today.

There’s speculation that other players could be investigated arising from separate incidents, including Cork captain Graham Canty for allegedly kneeing an opponent in the back early in the second-half.

Two years ago, Noel O’Leary, found himself in the same situation following a clash with Meath’s Graham Geraghty in the semi-final.

But, referee Brian Crowe, reported a yellow card was the appropriate sanction and O’Leary was cleared to play in the final.

Meanwhile, Clonakilty’s veteran playmaker Brendan Walsh is likely to miss the rest of the Evening Echo SFC campaign after breaking his ankle in a challenge match with Mid Kerry.

He is ruled out for the semi-final against Bishopstown on Saturday night, though Paudie Griffin is an option for the west Cork side as he continues his comeback from a knee injury.

The big action tonight is in Páirc Uí Rinn at 7.30pm when Ballincollig take on Douglas in the semi-final of the Evening Echo PIHC.
