McGarrity video proves 'inconclusive'

Video evidence of the off-the-ball incident which led to the Mayo footballer Ronan McGarrity fracturing his cheekbone during a recent club match has proven to be inconclusive.

The midfielder might be ruled out of Sunday's Connacht Senior Football Championship final against Galway, after he sustained the injury during Ballina Stephenites' Mayo Championship tie against Crossmolina last Sunday week.

The Mayo County Board has launched an investigation with County Secretary Sean Feeney stating that video evidence provided by Crossmolina does not show what happened and only shows McGarrity lying on the ground.

Ballina Stephenites do not have their own video footage of the incident. Feeney said that the investigation will have to rely on the testimony of independent witnesses.

Despite McGarrity's injury, Mayo senior football manager John O'Mahony has not ruled him out of featuring for his county this weekend.

"Ronan was in with us over the weekend and did a little bit of running, but the situation is evolving all the time," O'Mahony told the Mayo News.

"It's a long shot, but we have to wait until the swelling goes down and until Ronan speaks to consultants this week.

"It's not something that we can give a definite answer on at the moment but we're putting all our energy into sorting it out.

"Everybody just needs space at the moment because the nature of the injury means that it's something that has to be monitored."
