Cork 1-20 Mayo 0-11
Cork's Rebelettes look to have regained their invincible status as Eamon Ryan's charges romped to a 12-point win over Mayo in the Bord Gáis Ladies National Football league final at Kiltoom this afternoon.
Cork could afford to amass 10 first half wides and still managed to hold a comfortable 1-10 to 0-4 interval lead with Rhona Buckley who was a late call up for Amy O'Shea bagging a 14th minute goal.
Player of the Match Nollaig Cleary was to the fore throughout this game, with three first half points as the half-forward provided a settling force to a Cork side who lost defender Briege Corkery through a yellow card for a ten-minute spell in the sin-bin in the middle-third of the opening half.
Corkery was on target with two points for the eventual winners - both in a second half which saw Mayo start positively with the first two points from their scorer-in-chief Cora Staunton but ultimately ended in disappointment.
Mayo's failure to take their limited goal opportunities ultimately proved to be their downfall with Staunton missing a penalty late in the opening half, before Fiona McHale failed to slot a golden goal chance to the net two minutes after the restart.
McHale's opportunity arrived after an excellent assist from Natasha Beagan but the Carnacon club player slipped and although quickly regained her footing sent the ball wide of the target.
Cork gained great composure following this with Cleary adding three of the next four points as Cork paved the way for a fourth success in five campaigns.
Defender Geraldine O'Flynn and midfielder Juliet Murphy were also among those on target for the Rebellettes and although Mayo took the final two points of this game including one from Emma Mullen 15 seconds from the hooter, a strong third quarter by Cork paved the way for victory.
