Late point seals Cavan victory

Cavan 0-10 Limerick 0-9

A 67th minute point from Cian Mackey secured Cavan's first victory of the current NFL Division 3 campaign, following a slender one-point win at Kingspan Breffni Park tonight.

Limerick blasted into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, thanks to a trio of scores from free-taker Ian Ryan, full-back Shane Gallagher and Stephen Kelly.

However, Cavan also hit purple patches in this game with scores from Kieran Galligan, Martin Reilly and Seanie Johnston inside a seven-minute spell levelling the tie 10 minutes before the break.

The hosts began to dominate possession in the midfield sector.

Ian Ryan's second point edged Limerick back in front, but the sides were level on two occasions close to the break, before a Martin Reilly point edged Cavan into a 0-6 to 0-5 lead on the stroke of half-time.

The hosts held Limerick to just one point in the third quarter as they moved into a 0-9 to 0-6 lead, before a trio of scores, including a brace from teenager Ryan, levelled the contest at 0-9 apiece.

Scores were at a premium in the closing stages, and despite Cavan amassing 11 wides - eight in the second half - they managed to find the match-winning score courtesy of Mackey's late point.
