Victory for Waterford IT against a lacklustre Cork side
Cork 0-09 Waterford IT 0-14, Pairc Ui Rinn
Without their entire squad from last season due to their dispute with manager Gerald McCarthy, the odds were always against a patched-up Cork team winning their opening match of the season this afternoon.
And so it proved as Waterford IT beat the youthful Rebels at Pairc Ui Rinn to set up a Waterford Crystal Cup semi-final clash with Clare next Sunday.
The student side led by 0-06 to 0-04 at half-time and they would have been further ahead but for a strong showing from Alan Kennedy in the Cork goal.
Despite the best efforts of Cork's stand-in captain Barry Johnson, who scored 0-07 (0-06) in all, Waterford IT pulled away with Timmy Hammersley helping himself to three points from play.
James Gahan also chipped in with some impressive scores and of Waterford IT's final tally, 0-12 was from open play.
