Derry focusing on the future
They may have claimed the scalp of All-Ireland champions Kerry in today's NFL Division 1 final, but Derry stalwart Seán Marty Lockhart's sights are set firmly on the challenge ahead as the Oak Leafers must now prepare for their Ulster Championship opener away to Donegal on June 1.
Derry staged a remarkable comeback to claim a well-deserved 2-19 to 2-13 victory - turning around a seven-point deficit ,thanks to inspired displays from Fergal Doherty, Conleith Gilligan, and the ever dependable Lockhart.
Derry boss Paddy Crozier was also quick to put the win in context.
"Anytime you beat the All-Ireland champions you have to be delighted," he said.
"But we have to bring our league consistency through to the championship. We took a lot of hard knocks last year and now is the time to put that right, starting in Ballybofey on June 1."
Lockhart sprang from the bench before half time to shore up the Derry defence when all seemed lost.
Ten years on from the season he earned an All-Star for his efforts, Lockhart believes that although this is their first piece of silverware since 2000, the Derry side now has a "nucleus of experience" that can spur them to great heights this summer.
