McGarrity to lead Mayo in 2008

Ronan McGarrity has been installed as captain of the Mayo senior football team for the 2008 season.

The Ballina midfielder successfully battle testicular cancer last year and with a clean bill of health, he will hope to inspire Mayo to challenge for Connacht and All-Ireland honours again.

He officially took over as captain at the weekend from veteran forward Kevin O'Neill, who was admittedly surprised to be chosen for the role 12 months ago.

Commenting on McGarrity's appointment, Mayo manager John O'Mahony said: "Ronan impressed many people with his attitude last year and the way he dealt with his illness. He is a strong character and I'm sure he will be a strong captain too."

McGarrity had a return to form during Ballina's Mayo and Connacht-title-winning campaigns late last year.

The 26-year-old may not return to the Mayo fold until after his club's All-Ireland club championship run has ended - Stephenites face Nemo Rangers of Cork in a February 17 semi-final.

O'Mahony's Mayo side began the year on a losing note last Sunday when they lost their Connacht FBD League opener to NUI Galway on a 2-9 to 0-14 score-line.
