Dublin beat Wicklow at Parnell Park

Dublin 2-12 Wicklow 0-9

A Dublin team containing only six regulars still had enough firepower to beat Wicklow at Parnell Park tonight and qualify for the next round of the O'Byrne Cup.

St. Mark's clubman Barry Kennedy continued his goal-scoring form - he scored 1-3 in last week's Dubs Stars match - as Dublin settled the quicker.

Just when it looked like a Jason Sherlock point attempt would drop shot and come to nothing, Kennedy got in on the end of the ball to fist past Wicklow goalkeeper Billy Norman for a 16th-minute major.

Wicklow, who had former Carlow man Thomas Walsh partnering James Stafford in midfield, kept in touch through the point-taking of Paul Earls and JP Kelly.

Dublin's half-time lead of 1-6 to 0-4 would have been a lot tighter had their net minder Stephen Cluxton not been on top form. The 2007 All-Star did well to save efforts from Dalton, Derek Daly and Damien Power.

But with the midfield battle going in favour of Dublin's Shane Ryan and Eamonn Fennell and the veteran Sherlock, who helped set up a point for Declan Lally and was fouled for a Bernard Brogan free, particularly busy, the defending O'Byrne Cup champions always seemed to have an extra gear.

It was more of the same after the break and a goal from Pat Burke, with seventeen minutes remaining, effectively put the seal on the home win.

Sherlock and substitute Alan Brogan, whose two brothers Bernard and Paul both got game-time, combined to set up Burke's goal and put the Dubs 2-7 to 0-6 clear.

Wicklow badly needed a goal but it never came and they had to live off the efforts of top scorers Earls (0-3), Stephen Hurley, who is a newcomer to the panel this year, and Kelly (0-2 each).

Mick O'Dwyer's charges will go into the O'Byrne Cup Shield competition now and face the losers of Westmeath and DIT next weekend. Dublin will play the winners of that tie in the O'Byrne Cup quarter-finals, at Parnell Park tomorrow week.
