Queen's University caused an opening day upset in the 2008 Gaelic Life Dr McKenna Cup as they got the better of Monaghan at Clones this afternoon.

Displaying the greater teamwork and ability to hold onto possession, the Aidan O'Rourke-managed students pulled off a noteworthy 0-10 to 0-9 win.

Monaghan, who fielded a team mixed with youth and experience, trailed by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break and Queen's kept in front during a well-contested second half as Paul McComiskey, the game's top scorer, completed his six-point tally.

Queen's other scorers included Micheal O'Rourke and Paul McVey, while Conor Maginn registered the match-winning point.

Rory Woods (0-3), Conor McManus and Tommy Freeman (0-2 each) led the scoring for Monaghan.

The Farney men are away to neighbours Cavan in their second McKenna Cup next Sunday while next up for Queen's is a Casement Park clash with Antrim.
