Micko suffers heart scare

Wicklow manager Mick O'Dwyer may be forced to sit out his side's Tommy Murphy Cup clash with Offaly on Saturday week after suffering a minor heart scare.

O'Dwyer had the scare last week after he felt some discomfort whilst attending the Leinster SFC quarter-final replay between Dublin and Meath.

Having been admitted to Cork University Hospital, the 72-year-old underwent a minor procedure to have a stent inserted. He is said to be well on the road to recovery now after returning home to Kerry on Saturday.

Wicklow are back in training tonight in Aughrim for their first get-together since their replay defeat to Louth in the Leinster championship.

Selectors Gerry Farrell, Kevin O'Brien and Philip McGillicuddy will prepare the team as O'Dwyer concentrates on returning to full health.

The Waterville man hit out recently at the new format for the All-Ireland qualifiers which has left his side with only the Tommy Murphy Cup to compete for for the remainder of the season.

"It's an awful state of affairs," O'Dwyer admitted. "A team like Wicklow would have to have made the provincial final to have a back door. Sure that's crazy. That's discrimination against weaker counties in my opinion.

"A good run in the Tommy Murphy doesn't matter for anything, because it takes you nowhere to be honest. If you had the back door you could get a good draw and another game, which brings a team on."

Wicklow have won five, drawn two and lost six of their 13 competitive games since O'Dwyer took over in October.
