Heneghan key in Roscommon fightback

Roscommon kept the pressure on Monaghan at the business end of the NFL Division 2A table as they came from behind to beat Longford 0-15 to 0-12 at Hyde Park today.

Ger Heneghan finished a Roscommon’s top scorer with a handsome tally of 0-8 (5f), while late points from Enda Kenny, who scored from an almost impossible angle out on the right, and Karol Mannion confirmed what was a very pleasing fourth win on the trot for the Connacht men.

They trailed by 0-8 to 0-6 at the break, with Padraig Davis landing four points for Longford, but fought back to lead 0-12 to 0-8 by the midpoint of the second half.

Two of last year’s Roscommon minors, David Keenan and Conor Devaney, also saw action in the second period, although there was a worry for manager John Maughan as wing-forward John Tiernan was forced off with a late injury.

Table-toppers Monaghan scored a 0-16 to 1-5 win over London in Ruislip to maintain their 100% record ahead of their final clashes with Offaly and Leitrim.

Beleaguered Carlow, whose manager Andy Shortall resigned during the week, lost 3-15 to 1-7 away to Leitrim in Cloone.

A James Glancy got the home side up and running and Carlow’s chances were hit when defender Brian Leonard was red-carded. Brian Kelly kicked four first-half points for the Barrowsiders.

Offaly bounced back from an early 0-8 to 0-2 deficit in Tullamore to go on and record a 0-15 to 1-9 victory over a faltering Clare side.
