Armstrong goal helps Galway into final
Salthill-Knocknacarra star Sean Armstrong knocked in Galway's only goal as they comprehensively beat GMIT 1-19 to 0-7 to qualify for the Connacht FBD League final today.
After a sticky first quarter-hour, Peter Ford's charges had little difficulty in seeing off the students at the grounds of the Micheal Breathnach club in Inverin.
GMIT moved into an early 0-4 to 0-2 lead when John McGrath helped himself to three points and Longford's Stephen McCormack chipped in with a '45.
But the Tribesmen turned around with a 0-9 to 0-4 advantage as Barry Cullinane and Paul Geraghty began to boss midfield.
Nicky Joyce, who finished with an impressive tally of 0-7, helped Galway hit the front and Ja Fallon, operating at centre forward, was also on target.
Fallon accumulated 0-3 by the final whistle, with Derek Savage (0-4), Armstrong (1-1), Geraghty, Joe Bergin, Frankie Burke and Alan Burke (0-1 each) all raising white flags.
A swift interchange between the Galway forwards saw Armstrong bulge the GMIT net on the 46-minute mark.
The game took on a target practice feel thereafter with Roscommon youngster Donie Shine, who was sprung from the GMIT, impressing with two fantastic points from placed balls.
