Wexford Park to host Purple and Gold games
The fifth edition of the annual Purple and Gold Star matches, which see the cream of Wexford GAA talent on show, will take place at Wexford Park tomorrow (first throw-in 1pm).
There was some doubt about the availability of the main county ground, with Killurin and Piercestown being bandied about as possible venues, but the encounters will go ahead at Wexford Park.
Admission is €10, with the football match getting underway at 1pm and the hurling clash throwing in at 2.30pm. All proceeds from the games will go the Irish Handicapped Childrens' Pilgrimage Trust (Wexford Branch).
Oylegate-Glenbrien clubman Seamus Whelan has been chosen to referee the Wexford v Purple and Gold Stars football game, while the man in the middle for the Wexford v Purple and Gold Stars hurling tie is Francis Morrissey (Glynn-Barntown).
The honour of managing the Purple and Gold Stars teams has fallen to the managers of the Wexford Intermediate champions this year - meaning that St. Martin's boss Martin Quigley will lead the footballers, while John Whelan of Rathgarogue-Cushinstown will take charge of the hurling selection.
The Purple and Gold Star selections are based on players' form throughout the county championships. County supremos Paul Bealin and John Meyler are sure to be interested spectators as they preen their panels for the 2007 season.
