Kerry defender Seamus Moynihan has announced his retirement from inter-county football, in an interview published in today's Irish Times.

The Glenfesk clubman, who turns 33 next month, quits on a winning note after last weekend's All-Ireland SFC final triumph over Mayo.

He said: "I've played my last game for Kerry. It's definitely finished for me now."

In his 14-year career, Moynihan collected a stunning array of honours. Four All-Ireland SFC medals, three National League medals, six Munster SFC medals and two All-Star awards (1997 and 2000) were the highlights.

A company rep by profession, he also won one Railway Cup title with Munster, four Sigerson Cups with IT Tralee and six county titles with Glenfesk, as well as underage honours with Kerry, at minor and Under-21 level.

Coincidentally, on the back of some superb performances, Ireland won three of the four International Rules Test series that Moynihan competed in. He lined out against Australia in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.

Still basking in the glow of his fourth All-Ireland win, Moynihan admitted: "I made my mind up about that (quitting) a long time ago really, just didn't want to go public with it. There's no way it's going to get any better than this.

"I am as satisfied now as I'll ever be. To be honest, I said a long time ago that four All-Irelands was my target. I said that well before this year. That was always my target in football, and I've achieved that now.

"I'm 33 in October, getting married next July, and there's a lot of other things I'm looking forward to now, channelling my energy into other things," added the veteran centre back.

"I know I'm lucky to be able to walk away on a high like this, injury-free, and still able to enjoy my club football, which I hope to do for a few years yet."
