Tipp forward Carroll escapes ban

The GAA's Central Disciplinary Committee have ruled that Tipperary forward John Carroll has no case to answer over his squaring up to Waterford's Seamus Prendergast during last month's All-Ireland SHC quarter-final between the counties.

The GAA's Central Disciplinary Committee have ruled that Tipperary forward John Carroll has no case to answer over his squaring up to Waterford's Seamus Prendergast during last month's All-Ireland SHC quarter-final between the counties.

Video footage of the July 23 game showed Carroll striking Prendergast with his hurl in the dying seconds of the tie.

But despite the Roscrea man not receiving a yellow or red card for his actions, the CDC have dropped the case after consultating with match referee Barry Kelly from Westmeath.

A statement from the CDC read: "On receipt of clarification from the match referee in relation to an incident during the Waterford v Tipperary Guinness All-Ireland hurling quarter-final, and in line with the DRA ruling in the Ryan McMenamin case, it was agreed that the CDC were not in a position to pursue this matter."

Last year Tyrone defender McMenamin succeeded in having a four-week suspension, imposed by the CDC, overturned by the Disputes Resolution Authority.

Just over twelve months ago, McMenamin was cleared to play in the All-Ireland quarter-final against Dublin as the DRA ruled that CDC did not have "the requisite jurisdiction" to change a referee's ruling from a yellow card to a red card.

The 28-year-old Carroll scored 2-4 in this year's championship, including two goals in the quarter-final meeting defeat to the Deise.
