No floodlit league hurling fixtures this year - GAA

It’s been confirmed that the GAA won’t be staging any National Hurling League games under lights this year.

As Cork is the only county in Division 1 capable of hosting floodlit fixtures, it’s been decided that no night-time games will be played in this season’s league.

“There will be no hurling matches under lights this year,” said GAC secretary Sean O’Laoire.

“We would like to have reciprocal arrangements in place, but at the moment Cork is the only Division 1 team with floodlights at a county ground.

“We want every county to have the chance to train under lights so they can get used to it and be familiar with playing under these conditions. It’s a question of getting more grounds with lights and quality playing surfaces.”

Floodlit hurling matches should become commonplace in the next few years with the GAA having recently announced that two grounds in every province have been earmarked for the installation of floodlights within 12 months.
