Cork make history with 13-point win over Galway

A Juliet Murphy-captained Cork side have captured the Rebel county's first ever senior Ladies football title - outdoing All-Ireland champions Galway by 13 points in Limerick.

Crafty corner forward Valerie Mulcahy struck for two goals in either half of this well-contested re-fixed league decider - pulled two weeks ago due to poor weather conditions at Roscommon's Dr Hyde Park.

The Rebelettes were 1-06 to 0-04 in front on the half-hour as Mulcahy - who earlier had a goal disallowed - picked off a quick goal and point on 26 minutes.

Her attacking colleague Amanda Murphy was also on song with three well-hit points.

Galway, minus the talents of Niamh Fahy due to her international soccer duty, kept in the hunt as Annette Clarke, Niamh Duggan and Philomena Flaherty found their range.

It was all Cork in the second half as, although the Munster girls tallied up a wide count of 13, they prevailed. A Mulcahy penalty made it 2-08 to 0-05 midway through the second period.

And with Galway's thoughts turning to next weekend's Connacht championship opener against Mayo, there was coming back for PJ Fahy's side.
