Wexford 9-24 Down 2-04

Down's hurlers were treated to a scoring masterclass at Wexford Park this afternoon, as Nigel Higgins and Rory Jacob shared four goals in the home side's 9-24 to 2-04 NHL Division 1B win.

Full-forward Martin Coulter was the Mourne men's only saving grace as he chipped in with a goal and three points, with goalkeeper Graham Clarke also emerging with some credit.

It had all looked so good for the visitors after a fifth minute Gareth Johnson goal, but Wexford raced into a 3-18 to 1-02 advantage by the break.

Higgins, Eoin Quigley and Higgins again netted for the Slaneysiders with Coulter replying for the Ulstermen with two frees.

After Coulter's goal on the restart marked Down's last stand, further Wexford efforts from Barry Lambert, substitute Rory Jacob (2-02), his brother Michael and Chris McGrath sealed Seamus Murphy's side's passage through to the second phase.
