The chairman of the Leinster Council has defended the value of the O'Byrne Cup competition in the wake of the withdrawals by Carlow and Dublin.

Carlow decided to pull out of the competition at their convention at the weekend, while Dublin will field their U21 side after the late appointment of Paul Caffrey (pictured) as the senior team's new manager.
