48-week ban for club hurler

Lismore hurler James Shanahan, brother of inter-county star Dan, has been handed a 48-week ban for striking a referee after the ill-tempered Waterford SHC semi-final against Ballygunner last month.

Referee Michael Wadding said in his report that he was struck by Shanahan after the game had ended.

The GAC recommended the suspension at Monday night's county board meeting. It also banned Lismore and former Waterford 'keeper Brendan Landers for two months. Ballygunner’s Paul Flynn and Lismore's Michael Walsh, both Waterford senior hurlers, were given a one-month ban each.

Lismore club was fined €1,000.

Flynn and Walsh were issued straight red cards following a second-half brawl, which ended in Landers’ dismissal.
