Maughan's men knock out Tyrone

Mayo made their own magical contribution to a day of shocks at Croke Park by dethroning All-Ireland champions Tyrone with a display of flair and style.

John Maughan's side succeeded in closing down Tyrone's danger men, particularly Sean Cavanagh and Owen Mulligan, on their way to a richly deserved victory.

Now they face surprise packets Fermanagh in the All-Ireland semi-final, a novel pairing, and with it the promise of more adventure and expansive football.

Kieran McDonald sprayed the passes, and the Mortimer brothers threatened,, scoring three points between them as Mayo took an early grip.

Powerful midfield pairing David Brady and Ronan McGarrity were getting the edge, and Tyrone were on the ropes throughout the opening quarter.

By the 15th minute they trailed by 0-4 to 0-1, and having lost Brian McGuigan to injury before the throw-in, they were also deprived of the services of full back Conor Gormley, who went off injured.

Owen Mulligan and Mark Harte pulled back points from frees, but two Alan Dillon points kept the Connacht champions comfortably in front.

The introduction of Peter Canavan on 22 minutes added some extra spark to the Red Hand attack, and he sent Stephen O'Neill in for a point, before grabbing one himself.

But a huge effort from McGarrity raised Mayo spirits again, just after O'Neill had managed just a point from a glorious goal chance crafted by Kevin Hughes.

It was looking promising for John Maughan's side, three points to the good, before a long range score from Gerard Cavlan made it 0-9 to 0-7 at the break.

Conor Mortimer had opened up a 0-12 to 0-9 advantage when O'Neill struck for a sublime goal in the 10th minute of the second half, sending a screamer crashing into the top corner of the bet from Gerard Cavlan's pass.

Now the scores were level, but it was Mayo who stepped up the tempo again, and points from Trevor Mortimer, Dillon and a third for midfielder Brady sealed it for the men from the west, even the presence of Canavan not enough to save flagging Tyrone and their crown.
