Clare's Gerry Quinn has protested his innocence and said he did not intentionally strike Kilkenny All Star Henry Shefflin in last Saturday's quarter-final replay at Semple Stadium.

Quinn could face a suspension after RTÉ replays showed him striking the Ballyhale Shamrocks man with the butt of his hurley, through his faceguard, resulting in an eye injury to Shefflin that saw him leave the field of play.

However, Quinn maintained the clash was an accident.

He said: “The two of us were contesting a high ball, jostling for position. It wasn't intentional and completely accidental."
