Kelly says test opener to leave Croker

GAA President Sean Kelly has revealed that this year's International Rules test opener is likely to be held at a provincial venue instead of Croke Park.

Kelly admitted at today's launch of the International Rules series that a new venue will be used for the first test on October 17.

Two years ago both tests were held at Croke Park with over 70,000 cramming in for the decider, but the GAA are keen to bring the hybrid sport to a new audience outside Dublin.

Kelly said: "We're thinking very seriously and planning to stage the first game at a provincial venue.

"The second test will be at Croke Park but there are a number of stadia available to us for the first test such as Belfast, Clones, Galway or Thurles."

Kelly revealed that the new management team of boss Pete McGrath, selectors John Tobin, Larry Tompkins and John O'Leary as well as 'runner' Mickey Linden will stay in place for a two year stint.

McGrath said at today's press conference in Croke Park: "We'll spend the summer looking at players and we don't have any preconceived notions about who we're looking for.

"What we want is form players so everyone has a chance at this stage."
