The Westmeath player at the centre of an alleged attack that broke his jaw in a challenge game has hit out at the lenient one-month sentence for the assailant.

Lakes County rising star Finian Newman was left sucking through a straw for three weeks after an alleged attack by Cavan's Eddie Reilly in February, who was hit with a four-week suspension.

Newman blasted: "I had been expecting more. I had put my faith in the GAA system but it has let me down. I just can't leave it at this now."
