Meehan brothers book final for Caltra

CALTRA (Galway) 2-09 THE LOUP (Derry) 0-09

Connacht champions Caltra booked their March 17 visit to Croke Park, with a win over Derry’s The Loup, thanks to second-half goals from 19-year-old corner forward Michael Meehan and older brother Noel Meehan at Markievicz Park.

The AIB SF Club final will be see two club teams without final experience contest the decider following An Ghaeltacht’s three-point beating of Leinster champions St Brigid’s in Thurles.

The Derry side were dominant in the first half however, backed by a favourable wind with five of their forwards scoring inside the first half.

Ronan Rocks, Paul McFlynn (0-03) and Padraig Kane helped them into a three-point lead at the break, 0-08 to 0-05.

A left-footed free into the wind by teenage star Meehan after nine minutes allied to a placed ball from brother Noel saw the Galway men, playing in their county colours as both sides usually line out in green, levelled at 0-02 apiece in the early stages.

The Loup challenge fell off after the break as Caltra stung them with a goal just a minute after the restart.

Midfielder Tomas Meehan lobbed a sweet ball through for Michael Meehan to right foot home, and he pushed his side into a one point lead moments later, at 1-06 to 0-08.

Tomas Meehan notched a free closing in on the hour mark before hard working Noel Meehan, slipped in to goal again two minutes from time.
