Dublin defeat champions Tyrone

Dublin 0-9 Tyrone 0-8

Dublin defeated a 14-man Tyrone 0-9 to 0-8 in a poor game at a windy Parnell Park, as strong displays from forwards Ray Cosgrove and Jason Sherlock saw them repeat their one-point league win of twelve months ago.

In an ill-tempered encounter that saw ten yellow cards, neither side could establish an early footing. Busy half-forward Senan Connell was also stretchered off in one of four first half dust-ups.

The visitors made a late change with All-Ireland winner Stephen O’Neill returning from England to replace Seamus Mulgrew in the full-forward line, out due to work commitments.

Dublin midfielder Ciarán Whelan opened the scoring after two minutes with a right-footed score, before Tyrone forward Owen Mulligan pointed his first free of three in the first half in the 10th minute.

Half-forward Conal Keaney, who was earlier this week named in the Dublin hurling side for today’s Walsh Cup semi-final against Kilkenny, pointed after 12 and 36 minutes, as scores from Mulligan and O’Neill saw the sides level at 0-5 apiece at the break.

Na Fianna forward Sherlock flashed a goal chance wide after 43 minutes as Dublin pressed into the lead through a fisted Ray Cosgrove score.

Sherlock ghosted inside his marker Michael Magee three minutes later to put the scores at 0-7 to 0-5 before the impressive O’Neill brought the dual champions back to within one score.

O’Neill was dismissed by Tipperary referee on 58 minutes for his second bookable offence and despite a free from former Omagh Town soccer star Colm McCullagh, Dublin secured the win with a 68th minute point from Sherlock.

McCullagh had a late chance but his fisted effort from an acute angle went wide.
