Kelly 'clarifies' branded hurleys dispute
GAA President Seán Kelly has issued a statement clarifiying elements surrounding the recent publicity in regard to players and personal endorsements.
Bookmaker Paddy Power paid three players from Cork and Wexford €750 each to sport the company's logo on their hurls during last Sunday's All-Ireland semi-final which ended in stalemate.
Mr Kelly said: "Contrary to the impression given in some quarters personal endorsements are allowed in respect of players.
"As late as the last Central Council meeting the facility to avail of endorsement was greatly enhanced and welcomed by players.
Mr Kelly said, however, that such endorsements are allowed as long as they are not in conflict with "county or national competition sponsorship".
He also added that personal endorsements specifically exclude playing gear (a hurley is considered playing gear).
President Kelly said this was because "it is impossible for any sporting organisation to effect team
or competition sponsorship if competing 'ambush marketing' is allowed as a principle".
Mr Kelly said the matter would not be discussed by the Games Administration Committee at their meeting tomorrow night.
