Clare out of All-Ireland Championship

Galway 1-15, Clare 2-11

Galway edged out Clare by a solitary point in a thriller at Cusack Park, Ennis.

Six days after suffering a heavy defeat to Cork, the home side failed to remain in the Championship with Galway just about deserving the victory.

Clare got off to a flying start with a Barry Murphy goal, but the Tribesmen reacted positively and managed to go in a point ahead 0-10 to 0-06 at the break, following some good scores from Rory Gantley from frees and David Tierney from play.

In the second period, Galway registered a goal by Ollie Fahy in the 57th minute, but Clare replied almost immediately when Tony Griffin goaled following a good save by Liam O’Donoghue.

From then until the end, it was tit-for-tat with Gantley producing the winner from a 50 metre free one and a half minutes from the end of normal time.

Clare were thrown a lifeline in injury-time, but Niall Gilligan was off target for the Banner from a free from halfway with the last puck of the game.
