Mayo defeats Down in Newcastle
A goal by Ger O'Brady 12 minutes into the second half was a vital score as Mayo defeated Down by 1-11 to 0-12 in Newcastle.
Mayo had the better of the first half and led by 0-6 to 0-5 at half-time with corner-forward Conor Mortimer scoring five of their points.
Down played their best football in their third quarter and moved into 0-8 to 0-6 lead with two points by Michael Walsh and one from Padraig McCartan. It was all Mayo in the final 10 minutes with Stephen Carolan and Conor Mortimer getting the points which gave them victory.
Down mid-fielder Gregory McCartan and Mayo substitute Fergal Kelly were sent-off five minutes from time.
