Mayo hold off Sligo despite last-gasp effort

Mayo 2-8 Sligo 1-10

Div 1B

Mayo came out on top in this all-Connacht affair by a single point at MacHale Park, Castlebar.

The home team looked on course for a comfortable win when they led by five points with normal time almost up.

Goals from Conor Mortimer in the first half and Declan Sweeney midway through the second half had put Mayo in pole position but, in a dramatic injury time finale, Sligo almost snatched a draw when a goal and a point from Gerry MacGowan left just a single point between the teams.

However, it was Mayo who held on in the extremely wet and windy conditions to claim their first point of the campaign.
