Former Tipperary hurler John McIntyre has become the firm favourite to succeed the premier county's senior hurling boss Nicky English, should he decide to retire.

McIntyre, who was an outstanding centre-back with Tipperary in the early to mid eighties was formerly manager of the Offaly senior team and has been involved with a number of clubs in Galway where he works as sports editor of the Connacht Tribune.
