Galway continued their winning start to their defence of the All Ireland title they won last year after they finally overcame a tough challenge from an excellent Mayo side to win by 0-12 to 1-07.

Mayo had a dream start to the match when they took the lead after just 15 seconds through Michael Moyles who sent a powerful shot into the top corner of the Galway goal.

Mayo added another two points quickly after that and threatened to pull away from Galway who looked sluggish and too eager to go for goal rather then take points.

Galway still trailed at half time although they had reduced the gap somewhat as they rallied against the home side. The second half was littered with mistakes from both sides with both sets of forwards guilty of several wasteful wides.

Mayo continued to lead the match right up until the last minute of the game when a Padraig Joyce inspired fight back finally drew them level.

Even they Mayo still had to opportunity to regain the lead but missed several easy chances before Joyce and his brother Tommy added a point each in injury time to give the Tribesmen the win.

Galway now progress to the Connacht final but will have to improve on this performance if they are to produce a serious defence to the title they won last year.
