GAA: Mayo begin title defence

Defending national league champions Mayo got the defence of their title off to a solid if unspectacular start at a very wet and windy James Stephens Park in Ballina.

The turning point in the game came 10 minutes into the second half when Down defender Kevin McGrath was sent off for a second bookable offence.

At that stage, Mayo were leading by five points to three but Down were still very much in this game.

However, with just 14 players, the younger and less experienced Ulster side wilted under intense Mayo pressure in the last 15 minutes.

Mayo, who were leading by three points to two at half time wrapped up a deserved win with some excellent points from brothers Conor and Trevor Mortimer, James Gill and Marty McNicholas.
