GAA: Cork suffer first league defeat

Wexford 2-14, Cork 1-09 (full-time)

The Cork bandwagon was knocked off course as Wexford handed out a shock eight point defeat in their Allianz Division 1B National Hurling League game at Enniscorthy.

The victory was as comprehensive as the final scoreline suggests.

Leading 2-07 to 1-04 at the interval with two goals from Paul Codd (6 mins) and Paul Finn (31 mins), Wexford stormed into the lead.

The Cork goal arrived from Seanie McGrath just nine minutes into the game after a Ben O'Connor effort had been blocked out.

Rocked by first half injuries to Brian Corcoran and Michael Morrissey, the Cork second half recovery never materialised as Wexford centre-forward Paul Codd struck three unanswered points within six minutes of the restart.

Despite the sterling efforts of Pat Mulcahy, who had moved to centre-back Cork were unable to break down the Wexford defence in which Daragh Ryan, Liam Dunne and Sean Flood were outstanding.

To complete Cork's day of misery Kevin Murray had a penalty saved eight minutes from time.

Wexford held frim despite the loss of full-back Daragh Ryan through injury in the closing minutes to hand Cork their first defeat of the current campaign.
