Burke dynasty ready to reign for St Thomas’

Colm Farrell’s shop front is awash with red and blue bunting. There’s a Gort flag on display too, although the St Thomas’ chairman maintains that has only been put up to keep the employees satisfied.

Farrell is an auctioneer whose business is located on Georges Street in Gort and says there has been some amount of slagging this week as the neighbouring South Galway clubs prepare to meet in tomorrow’s county hurling decider. Ironically enough, his is one of the first buildings to come into view at the end of the N66 stretch which connects the two parishes – Kilchreest and Peterswell – feeding into the St Thomas’ club.

“There is a rivalry there and it is very much town versus country. It’s a healthy rivalry, though. We live amongst each other and we work amongst each other,” Farrell remarks.
