You make your own future, cautions Waterford hurler Patrick Curran

Eight of Saturday’s All-Ireland winning team have already played league or championship at senior level and such was the dominance of this Déise U21 group that pressure will now grow for a senior title to be delivered in the near future.

“We want to win a senior. We wanted to win one this year. But there is no guarantee we are going to go on and win one. It doesn’t work like that,” Curran remarked.

“We have to put in the hard work and effort. We have to keep doing that and if we do that, hopefully, we might get there someday.

“There are fellas on this team who will play senior and there are lads on this team who have already played senior. This team could be [the foundation of future senior success].

“Who knows what will happen in the future. You make your own future.”

The 20-year old joint-captain supplied the second of Waterford’s five goals in Thurles and then produced a moment of magic when, with his back to goal, he hand-passed the sliotar under his arm to the onrushing Stephen Bennett. The latter duly obliged to deliver goal number three.

“When the ball was coming in, I had a quick look and I saw Stephen making the run. I hand-passed it more into space than anything.

“Thankfully, he finished it from there. He did what he does best.

“We worked really hard too. We did the dirty work.

“That is what we aimed to do before the game.

“We knew it wasn’t going to be the fancy stuff that would win us the game.

“We mixed the skill with real hard-work and that is what won it for us.”

Curran, who finished as top-scorer in the final with 1-9, added: “At minor, everyone is saying can you push on and they are kind of doubting you.

“Thankfully, we’ve shown progression in the last three years.

“Lifting the cup was some feeling. It is something we don’t experience too often.”
