County players blast Tommy Carr’s commentary

Tommy Carr’s RTÉ co-commentary on yesterday’s All-Ireland semi-final has come in for scathing criticism from a number of inter-county footballers, including Dublin’s Jack McCaffrey.

County players blast Tommy Carr’s commentary

The 2015 footballer of the year, currently taking a year out from the inter-county game, lambasted the former Cavan, Dublin, Roscommon and Westmeath manager’s analysis of the match. “The fact that Tommy Carr is making money off commentary gives me some hope of one day being an astronaut,” McCaffrey tweeted.

Clare goalkeeper Joe Hayes posted on the social network: “My two-year-old daughter would do a better job commentating on GAA matches than Tommy Carr. He is a joke and he actually hasn’t a clue for a man that captained and managed Dublin.”

Hayes’ Banner colleague also wrote on Twitter, quoting one of Carr’s quips during the game: “I’m sure he’s had much worse at a disco in Castlebar at 3 in the morning” - Tommy Carr re tackle on Aidan O’Shea... RTÉ substitution needed.”

Another Clare player Dean Ryan wrote: “Performance of the day has to go to Tommy Carr though for some truly outrageous statements.”

Meanwhile, Tipperary are now set to lose the services of Peter Acheson who is planning to leave the country to seek job opportunities in the Middle East. The captain, who broke his hand earlier in the week, is likely to head to Dubai.

“I was supposed to be gone two years ago but I was convinced twice to stay back,” Acheson told Newstalk.

“I’m glad I did now in fairness. I’m only 26, if I’m gone for a year or two, I might take the boots back out at some stage maybe.

“I’ve been playing now for seven years. Look, if I don’t go now, I’ll never go. It’s just a pity that this is when Tipp are driving on, it’s a pity we didn’t do it seven years ago.

“I’m happy out that I was a part of it and I’ve no doubt that the lads inside in the dressing-room will drive it on.”
