Cork mourns hero John Bennett

John Bennett, whose death occurred yesterday, was an All-Ireland senior hurling medal winner with Cork in 1966 and a member of the Blackrock team which in 1956 reclaimed the county championship after a 25-year wait.

A native of Douglas, he was an accomplished singer and made several records with the Ardellis Ceilí Band.

Born in 1934, the lack of an under-age structure in Douglas prompted his move to Blackrock, and he lined out in the first of three county senior finals in 1954, when Glen Rovers were champions.
